I have noticed that my Someday List serves a psychological purpose -- when I put something on it, it's like putting it in "Free Parking."

My list also has lots of items that have been on it for a while, but I have noticed that there is no cost to my peace of mind.

I also haven't seen that it's s list that *requires* pruning -- but sometimes it's fun to go through it just to see what's on it, and to see if I have started working on any of its items.  Then I can cross them off... and that feels good also.

I can relate to Rachel's anxiety about her Someday list, but I have learned to see it not as a sign of failure (gee nothing ever gets done here!) but as a dreams place.  Failure is a short list and success is a big list.  Hokey maybe but it gets me through the review.

I will admit though that some things do 'graduate' off that list and it is usually because the dream becomes a project and this only happens when it becomes more specific.  So "Getting better at photography" morphs into "Sign up for Fall'08 Amateur Photography class at Community College" or "Make Photo album for Mum of the kids".  For me specificity is the key to turn a dream into a reality. My someday list has morphed into a section of my moleskine set aside for "Initiatives".  That definition covers a number of things for me, including someday/maybe type items.

I really like this.

Sometimes, simply renaming something releases conceptual constraints and opens new possibilities for use.

I'd like to see a sampling of those "initiatives." What kind of things are on that list?

Sorry for the delay, guys.

The reason I use the word "intiatives" is that it is stuff that I need to take action on.  So in essence...it is my project list.  Now this project list does include a lot of dreams.  You can say there is no separation between my project list, and my "bucket list".

I do not really divide my initiatives between current stuff and the "someday/maybe".  The reason is that I do not want to let my dreams to ever get out of sight.  Each time I do my weekly review, I can see all of the stuff I need to do, and the stuff I want to do.

So some of my "initiatives" are things like...
  • Plan another trip to New York
  • Travel to Old Trafford to see Manchester United play (I am close to actually doing this one)
  • Purchase Macbook & Macbook Pro for me and Melody
  • Live on mine...save hers

You get the idea.

Initiatives?  They are initiatives because no one will give them to me.  I have to make them happen.  They are up to me...and I never want to lose sight of that.

This is a great thought...it's really causing me to reconsider my someday/maybe list. Thank you!

What a fantastic concept - that of renaming and re-defining your Someday/Maybe. I have never been comfortable with that term, it is just off-putting to me.
In about 10 minutes I too will have a section in my notebook for initiatives!

Gosh I like the term "Initiatives". That so much better captures my idea of "getting real" with that list.

So good.

The "initiatives" concept is one of those ideas that's stuck with me. I've found myself thinking about it while driving. That means it's made an impression on me. Thanks, Jason!!

Never realized it was that novel an idea. Smiley
